Eleven Things you Don’t Need at Walt Disney World

One of the most stressful parts of planning a Walt Disney World vacation is all the hype surrounding planning the perfect trip (ironic, I know, coming from a blog focused almost exclusively on planning Disney trips). The truth is, your attitude is the limiting factor of any trip: you can plan the perfect trip, yet if you over-plan and go in with a perfectionist, idealist outlook on how your trip has to play out in order for you to enjoy it, you’ll surely end up disappointed.

On the other hand, we’re about to show you how to forgo many things you’ve probably heard described as Disney vacation essentials. But they’re not as essential as your outlook–as long as you maintain a great attitude and decide you’re going to have a magical time, you will!

Here are eleven Disney non-essentials: things you’ve probably been told are must-haves, but that you actually really don’t need to enjoy a magical time at the happiest place on earth.

You don’t need MagicBands.

Anyone can purchase and use a MagicBand, a bracelet you can link to the My Disney Experience app and then use as a ticket to tap into the parks & rides (if you’re using Genie +, Lightning Lane or virtual queue). If you’re staying at a Disney Resort, you can also use a MagicBand to charge purchases back to your room and open your hotel room door.

Personally, I don’t want to spend the money on something I’ve heard tends to fall off and has to be charged nightly (please, not another device to charge). The teens and adults in our family use our iPhones and Apple watches to access My Disney Experience, and our tween is always with one of us anyway, so we scan him in/buy what he needs.

You don’t have to stay on property.

We have stayed off-property at Walt Disney World multiple times, and made just as many magical memories as the times we stayed on property. Yes, being on property is convenient and comes with perks–but it’s also very expensive.

Remember, there are always split stays! Sometimes, we stay off property except for the days we want Deluxe Resort Perks in the parks. Here’s a post all about places you can stay off-property for free or almost free using credit card points & miles! We tell you which of these properties are Official Walt Disney World hotels, meaning you’ll enjoy a free park shuttle and early entry to the parks in the morning.

For days we want Deluxe Resort Perks, we stay in the Walt Disney World Marriott Swan, Dolphin or Swan Reserve Resorts because you can book those using Marriott points. Our favorite perk is Extra Park Hours: if it’s a Monday, Deluxe Resort guests can stay in EPCOT for an extra two hours after closing…and on certain Tuesdays and Wednesdays, Deluxe Resort guests can do the same at Magic Kingdom! Extra hours means extra short ride lines. You can read more about our recent stay at the Dolphin here:

You don’t have to visit every park.

The really fun thing about Walt Disney World is that it’s four separate, unique parks. It’s also the exhausting, expensive thing about Disney World: there are four parks and you have to pay separately for entrance to each one. But you do not have to visit every park every trip to ensure a good time. For example:

One trip, we spent one day at Animal Kingdom, and a day at Universal Orlando.

Another time, we enjoyed an adult trip to Hollywood Studios & EPCOT.

Last year, we took our kids to Universal, Hollywood Studios & EPCOT.

I haven’t been to Magic Kingdom in years.

You do NOT have to go to every park every time to have fun; in fact, we NEVER have!

You don’t have to make Dining Reservations.

I have never made a Disney dining reservation. NEVER. I don’t want to wake up at 3am Pacific time when reservations release, or pay Mousewatcher to search reservations. We prefer quick-service meals (there are plenty of places to sit and eat!) and mobile-ordering food in the My Disney Experience app.

Also, you can sometimes score last-minute meals at sit-down restaurants by grabbing a walk-up in the My Disney Experience App. This is how I visit Oga’s Cantina every time I’m at Hollywood Studios. I’ve NEVER had a reservation! Check the list of available walk-up dining here.

You don’t have to wear special or matching clothes.

You can wear your everyday clothes and shoes to Disney and have a fantastic time! I’ve worn regular clothes, thrifted Disney clothes, whatever. Choose layers of clothes that will keep you warm or cool, comfortable and happy on your trip. If that means matching Disney shirts, go for it!

You don’t need park hopper tickets.

I just bought our first park hopper tickets ever, and it’s because on our next trip we only have one day to do Disney. Before that, we always always always saved time and money by visiting one park per day. You save time because you don’t have to scurry between parks, and you save money because the one-park tickets cost less!

Another way to save serious dollars on your Walt Disney World admission is by purchasing conference tickets (whether you’re going to a conference or not)! Simply google “My Disney Group” plus the month and year you’ll be visiting the parks (i.e. My Disney Group July 2024), and if you find a conference taking place while you’re there–and there’s a public ticket link on the conference site without any prohibitive fine print, you can use it to save ~25% on your tickets. I know because I’ve done it.

You don’t have to rope drop.

Rope-dropping refers to the practice of being at the parks before they open and lining up at the ropes inside until the cast members drop them. We actually LOVE doing this, because you can ride so many rides while the crowds are low and lines are short in the morning hours.

But there are plenty of other ways to skip lines, including single rider, rider swap, riding during fireworks & staying until closing. If getting up early is going to ruin your vacation, don’t do it.

You don’t have to have an itinerary.

You DO need to plan ahead by making park reservations, but beyond that, as long as you don’t care about long lines, you can go with the flow: arrive when you want, ride what looks fun in the moment, people watch, vibe the parks, wander in and out of shops, have a snack you didn’t research, whatever. Remember: you decided to have a good time, so you will!

You don’t have to ride every ride.

Even if you visit every park on your trip, you’ll need multiple days at some of them in order to ride every ride. If it stresses you out to plan out your park days, let it go. Let everyone in your party take turns choosing rides. Go with the flow. Something will probably be closed for refurbishment anyway, so even if you made the perfect plan and executed your plan just the right way, you can’t control every circumstance and there will probably be something you don’t get to ride.

It just means you have to go back again another time. Or not.

You don’t have to buy Genie + or Lightning lane.

I’ve never purchased either one. As long as you’re prepared to possibly stand in a few very long lines for the most popular rides, you don’t need to purchase Genie + or Lightning Lanes.

You don’t have to pay full price.

You knew this was coming: we’re almost free travelers, and that means we save as much money as possible on our Disney trips, using credit card points and miles and other tips and tricks. For an introduction to how we save money on Disney trips, visit this blog post:

Takeaways

Remember, what you actually have control over on any vacation is your attitude. You don’t need to buy every line-skipping-gimmick and stay at a monorail resort to enjoy a magical vacation. All you need to do is remember that you’re there to make memories and experience joyful magical moments with the people you love.

And maybe eat a dole whip.

  1. I find it more restful to stay off-property at Disney World. It’s quieter, and I’d rather just take our rental car back to the hotel than compete for the on-property transportation.
